Flag-burning amendment fails

Well, today we got another example in repuke government and Democratic cowardice. The United States Senate, having nothing better to do, just spent two days debating a "flag desecration amendment".
The amendment - "The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States" - failed, 66 to 34. Sixty-six Senators felt that two days of debate were the appropriate response to the epidemic of flag-burning; there were thirteen reported incidents last year, four so far this year.
It's not as if we have an energy crisis, a budget crisis, a healthcare crisis or a war going on, of course. One day, when the history books about our decline and fall have been written, it will be nonsense like this over which our descendants will disbelievingly shake their heads.
