Should republicans be allowed to adopt?

Last night, there was a really disturbing segment on NOW about Florida's ban on gay adoptions. The battle lines are familiar: one the one hand, you have gay couples who want to adopt kids, on the other, a bunch of self-righteous Nazi toads (probably closet cases themselves, like most homophobes) who wish to stop them.

Mathew Staver, head of Liberty Counsel, an organization that promotes "traditional values", believes that homosexuals, regardless of their parenting skills, should not be allowed to adopt children.

"…If you have a boy or a girl that is raised in a same sex household, they are more at risk from an environmental standard or a situation to grow up gay… Their identity of who they are, their esteem, their self worth and their socialization is ultimately going to be affected as well," Staver told Brancaccio.

So on the one hand, we're supposed to increase the number of children in need of an adoptive home, by eliminating abortions, but on the other hand, we need to reduce the pool of available homes because bigotry is more important than getting children out of orphanages.

Makes total sense to me - compassionate fascism in action.

Now here's the question: given that extreme wingnuttery demonstrably leads to depravity - alcoholism, child molestation, drug abuse, embezzlement, fraud, larceny, lunacy, prostitution, cult membership, loofah abuse and so on (to name just a few examples from the last few months), should republicans be allowed to adopt?

I say no. Entanglement with republicans might lead children to adopt what is manifestly an unhealthy and morally poisonous "lifestyle". Do you want your toddler to grow up to be the next Bill O'Reilly - a national laughingstock? Or the next Ann Coulter, an alcoholic, hate-filled, whorish, delusional shrew?

The evidence is overwhelming that wingnuts prey on children to reproduce their scandalous "lifestyle". Congress and the states should act now, before it is too late, and save children from a guaranteed slide into moral leprosy.
