The UAE port takeover

I've been reading (and commenting elsewhere) about the controversy on a company owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates buying port facilities in this country, including the West Side Terminal in Manhattan.

That is an awful idea, and here's why: the problem is not that it is an Arab company, whatever that may mean in a world where capital flows across borders.

The problem is that the company is owned outright by a government that is slip-shod in handling terrorism and that contains terrorist sympathizers, which was one of only three governments to recognize the Taliban, and from whose territory aid flows to Al Qaeda, Hamas and other organizations upon which we look with disfavor.

Some people - the usual suspects - are clamoring to end this transaction because it involves Arabs. Others are good Democrats who find themselves in the unusual position of agreeing with Turdblossom's baby. That's missing the point. The question is whether we want these facilities to be owned by an entity in which we have to hsitate to place our trust.

From a political angle, I can't believe that King George has decided that this issue is where he wants to defy Congress. It's not going to work. And thank you for just taking care of that old canard about 'keeping America safe'. That's over.
